From the desk of Melissa Pehle-Hill
In hearing that many elected officials are switching over from the Democrat Party to the Republican Party I have mixed feelings though most of those feelings are not of joy or elation but rather of disgust and aggravation.
Let me explain. Yes, I am happy that they are jumping ship from the Democrats who are now being led toward socialism at a pace that is shocking to the American people. But why did it take them so long to decide that? Did they not realize the Democrats had become socialists until after the last election and the Republicans took the two seats from Democrats?
Then there is the statement I read by one of them saying that their values hadn’t changed but the Democratic Party had changed so they were jumping over the aisle to become part of the Republican Party. Does that not scream wrong to you? It certainly does me and here’s why.
Republicans are conservatives and Democrats are liberals so that in and of itself should say that this is not good for the people as it further waters down the party which is supposed to stand for conservative values like God, Family, and Country. Conservatives believe that the Constitution is the law of the land and not to be interpreted to allow God to be removed or gays to marry as the liberals do.
Do you see the problem here? Then the fact that there are those in the Republican Party who think this is great. I find this scary to say the least. Oh sure, it gave the Republicans a bigger majority here in Texas, technically. But are they really? These people said themselves that their values didn’t change so how does that help the Republicans by anything other than having more R’s listed after people’s names than they did before they flipped? They are still going to vote their liberal beliefs and values, not the conservative ones Republicans are supposed to be protecting and fighting for. And how do we actually know that the ones who flipped don’t really stand with Obama and his ilk? Because they jumped ship? Are you kidding me? They did it right after other Democrats lost. They didn’t do it when Obama came up with the Cap and Trade Bill (that will hurt Texas terribly if it passes), or when they came up with Obamacare, or when the government bought its first auto manufacturer, or even when the noise from the Tea Parties was fresh in our ears. But they did when they saw that people voted against others bearing the same brand—and they obviously want to remain in office—so they jumped for the lifesaver.
Should the Republican Party welcome them with open arms? No and they said why themselves—their values haven’t changed—they are still Democrats, still liberals, and the people who vote for Republicans ARE NOT. And that is what the Party Elite of the Republican Party seems to have forgotten or are simply choosing to ignore.
Maybe it is because the Silent Majority has been silent so long that the Party Elite don’t feel they merit consideration. That is where I feel they are wrong and why I feel that the time has come when the people can and will take their country back. However, we need to all remember, voters and elected officials alike, this is not a football game that never ends where the party winning an election should be our greatest concern. The election in 2010 is not about which party is in power when the dust settles—it is about putting the country back in the hands of the people and that can only be done by putting the right people in each seat not by blindly supporting someone because of what letter follows their name.

This is the first I’ve heard about the switch, but I somewhat agree with you. If they’re going to be RINOS, we don’t need them. It’s important for the two party system to have equal representation and not one party rule with the same president of that party. Even when we had Bush and both the House and Senate as well as a majority of Governorships, it didn’t seeem to work but engendered an unmanageable government divided by bi-partisan politics. We ultimately need another Reagan, who can unite the country and get cooperation from both sides.
You make me want to be a Texan. You are absolutely right. This is just one more reason why Michael Steele should not be leading the Republican Party. The Republican Party has got to tighten up their standards if they ever expect to gain back the confidence of the people. We do not need to be playing a numbers game with the Democrats. If half the membership of the Democratic party changed over it would not ensure victory in 2010 or in 2012. Michael Steele is making a big mistake in not realizing how completely unhappy we the people are with both parties. It’s not Republicans against Democrats any longer. It’s the people against the government. Becky Suggs
Amen! We need to be forceful now, more than ever, that we support conservative values, not the Republican or Democratic party. The last thing we need is more RINOs and that is what we will get if we accept Dems in the party who retain their values but recognize that the people are not happy with the policies being implemented and forced on the American people by the liberals.
It sounds like you all feel as though the Republican Party has left you behind–as I hear often. That is what the Dems are saying about their party as well. Their party has gone socialist and the Republican Party is accepting RINOs. None of this serves the people or this great nation in any way, on any level. I’m glad to know others agree.
